Presents for New Parents and Baby > Newborn baby gifts
Best gift to receive is a hamper with wipes/nappies/bottles things that are used daily and run out fast!
Lotions and stuff last a while but never can have too many nappies! You could also get some sweet little toys that are suitable from birth up to go in the hamper or something. I love the lamaze range also their stuff is gorgeous.
If its a first baby there's not many gifts they wont appreciate because they wont have things from previous children. Also those little body suits that are like singlets at the top and have cut off legs are great - they have blue ones at pumpkin patch.. ok Ill stop now !! I could go on all night with gift ideas hahahahaa

My 10 month old niece was given a tiffany rattle and watch out when they've got it in their hands! It's on her change table and I've given it to her to play with while I change her nappy. I've been whacked with it quite a few times!!!
Otherwise I LOVE babysgotstyle!!! I bought gifts from there (all the sizes are 0's and my niece was a 6x0 when she was born!) for her to add to her birthday present. The packaging was SO nice - in a printed cloth carry bag, plus it had a hand written card. I would HIGHLY recommend it.

Nappies are always good, or a gift certificate, for a nappy service if they are using cloth ones.
The clothes I liked best for my babies when they were newborns were one-piece outfits that snapped up the front. So easy to get them in and out of. Also, for summer, just tank tops/singlets -- Bright Bots makes really nice, colourful ones. It's also good to get a range of sizes so the baby has something ready to grow into.
One of my favourite gifts was a backpack nappybag. It looks like a regular black backpack but has an insert with a changing pad and tons of pockets and zippered compartments. I found it really useful and much easier to carry on my back (and better looking) than the other cutsie baby bags I was given. My girls are 3 and 4 and I still use it now to take changes of clothes, snacks, and even a portable toilet seat for toilet training.
Lamaze toys are also great. Also, newborn babies see best in black and white or very high contrasting colors, so something like a crib panel or a book with really bold designs can really catch their interest. Also little dangly toys to hang on the pram are always entertaining. Baby Love make some cute ones.
If you are spending a bit more money, two of the other best gifts we got were a baby rocker (I hear the bouncers are very good too) and one of those child foam couches that open up (ours has Winnie the Pooh on it). The rockers are great because you can incline the baby at different heights and bring it from room to room easily. The couch was fantastic because it is low enough to put an infant on and not worry about them falling off (you can always put pillows or soft blankets around it), plus they can get "tummy time," they can stretch and wiggle in a way they can't in more enlosed rockers. My kids still use theirs now to sit and sprawl on when watching TV.
