Gifts Ideas for Difficult Situations > gift for my boyfriend's mum for her 60th birthday

hi... bit of an awkward gift buying dilemma. My BF's mum is having her 60th birthday party next week and I need to buy a present because I've been invited to the family celebration. BUT here's the catch - the mother doesn't like me at all (and probably doesn't know I've been invited to the party) She's been very rude to me, usually when my BF is not iin the room!

SO... I can either buy her a really nice gift to show that I want to for us to get along and be friends.

OR... I can buy her a really crappy or inappropriate gift to reflect how she has treated me.

Any advice welcome

a leopard doesn't change its spots. If she's been rude to you in the past, she'll be rude to you again. Don't buy her a nice present. Just get her a very neutral gift (a glass vase from Target or something) .

be careful about buying a gift that's too crappy. It might upset your boyfriend. Guys never see the bad behavior of their mothers.. so it's best not to inflame that situation. Believe me, you won't win!

buy her a book about femininity and power. Fire With Fire by Naomi Wolf is a good one. It may encourage her to stop trying to hold on to her perceived power base (control over her son) and encourage her to find a more fulfilling role for herself

get her a bitter lemon and tell her to suck on it.... lol

I hate it when women get all weird about their sons - they should let go

Buy her something like a cooking demonstration evening or a painting lesson. Something that will help her find her own interests and stop meddling in her son's life

I'd hire her a stripper just to see the look on her face. Of course you'd never admit it was you!
